A Root Canal is necessary when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the root canal system, becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp is removed, the canal cleaned and filled, and the tooth sealed.
If the tooth fails to heal following Endodontic Therapy (Root Canal Treatment), Endodontic Retreatment may become necessary.
An Apicoectomy - Endodontic Microsurgery - may be needed when an infection develops or won't go away after Endodontic Therapy (Root Canal Treatment) or Retreatment. An Apicoectomy is done only after a tooth has had at least one Endodontic Procedure and Retreatment has not been successful or is not possible.
